Artist Statement

when photograpy becomes more like painting

The trajectory of my process puts together the elements I have produced over time, my photography, my printing by hand with some painting some drawing .

Years ago I took photographs of friends to use as references for my figure paintings.  While the photos were intriguing, the faces close up were never the focus. Now that time has passed they seem more interesting and betray the poses in the photographs.

In this work I have have enlarged sections of the photographs . The focus has changed to the face.  The same photos now take on a new life.  New interpretation..the photos are no longer about the situation or pose, and with each printing the new generation becomes redefined. As the section is magnified, the colors change, the eye focus changes and the expression becomes magnified..

The repetition of the images results in a concentration of expression.  I have hand printed each face and as a result the printing is different each time as the inks land slightly over or paler and some of the color fades. The hand lays the print down differently as well causing a shift. The printing changes as the cartridges empty a little with each print. The printing becomes unreliable which in turn creates, expels a different look.

The quality becomes un-solid and painterly with the repetition reiterating the same..looking different.
